The Deutscher Presserat (German press council) continues to call for a review of the controversial Caroline Judgment by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. “Since this judgment poses a number of grave uncertainties for practical journalism, a review is urgently required”, emphasised Presserat speaker, Dr. Ilka Desgranges. The German Federal Government has refused to appeal against the Judgment.[mehr]

02.12.99 - Schily’s Meeting with the German Press Council - New Proposal for Data Protection in the Media

Yesterday, Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily met representatives from the German Press Council and proposed a new way of regulating data protection in the journalistic sector. According to this, an agreement with the German Press Council is to lay down that the media corporations themselves should be concerned about protecting journalistic data against access from unauthorised persons. If the German Press Council and the media were to enter into such a voluntary obligation with an agreement of this kind, they would have to be responsible for organisationally safeguarding it.[mehr]
